PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Freshman
Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) won his third straight match at No. 6 singles as Villanova (8-9) fell to Penn (3-2) in a 6-1 decision at the Hamlin Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. The match was the second in nine days between the pair of Big 5 teams. The host Quakers swept the doubles matches to open Sunday's competition and went on to tally wins in five of the six singles matches despite a number of hard-fought decisions throughout the lineup.
Nguyen was a 6-4, 6-2 winner in his No. 6 singles match against Sameer Gangoli to improve to 8-4 this season, including 6-2 in the sixth spot of the lineup. Five of his six wins at No. 6 singles have come in straight sets, including Sunday's victory which accounted for the Wildcats lone point of the day.
The closest of the other singles matches came in the No. 2 match where
Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) won the first set against Aditya Gupta before falling in a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 decision. Freshman
Anthony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) played a close match at No. 5 singles against Jeff Zucker before falling 7-5, 6-2. The other wins for Penn came at No. 1 singles where sophomore
Alex Kim (Cary, N.C.) lost a 6-0, 6-1 match and at No. 3 singles where freshman
Eitan Khromchenko (Manalapan, N.J.) fell 6-0, 7-5.
In the doubles matches, Kim and senior
Daniel Martinez (Coral Gables, Fla.) were narrowly defeated 7-5 at the No. 1 spot while Prokurat and sophomore
Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) fell by the same margin in the No. 3 doubles match. Robinson and junior
Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) were on the short end of a 6-2 result at No. 2 doubles.
Villanova travels to Loyola (Md.) for a 3 p.m. match on Monday afternoon. That contest will wrap up the regular season for the Wildcats, who begin competition in the BIG EAST Championships on Thursday in Cayce, S.C.
