MORGANTOWN, W.Va - At the conclusion of the second day of the WVU Mountaineer Invitational the Wildcats have, for the most part, remained steady. After 40 events over two days, Villanova's women's swim and dive team has a tight grip on third place and trails West Virginia by just 4.5 points. William & Mary leads the way with 1,059.50. Meanwhile, the men remain in fifth place.
Villanova Women
It was another day at the office for the women's team, who continued to put up fast times. The Wildcats had three first-place finishes on the day and placed in the top three seven times.
Kelly Montesi notched one first place win in the 400 IM, swimming a time of 4:15.27.
Kaitlin Gravell also swam in the event, placing third with a time of 4:23.64. Villanova also took first in the 800 freestyle relay thanks to Montesi,
Anna Turner,
Nicole Welch and
Milly Routledge. The foursome went 7:22.87, edging out William & Mary for the top spot by .11 seconds. The grouping of
Andrea Fong,
Anastasia Kontrimas,
Emily Provenzo and Gravell took sixth in the same event, swimming 7:37.15. Routledge picked up another top finish in the 200 freestyle, touching the wall in 1:49.35.
The 200 medley relay team of Montesi,
Rayann Jaryszak,
Micaela Grassi and Routledge finished second in 1:41.40. Grassi also placed third in the 100 butterfly (55.16), while Jaryszak went 1:03.55 in the 100 breaststoke and took third. Also in the 100 butterfly was
Tarryn Els, who finished fifth in 55.91. Welch finished fifth in the 200 freestyle, going 1:52.03. Villanova also placed sixth in the 200 medley relay, while
Margaret Kleinsmith placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke.
The Wildcats had three divers compete as well.
Andrea Holtz finish 15th in the 3m dive with 201.45.
Danielle Scarano took 17th, while
Bridie Dunn placed 19th.
Villanova Men
The Wildcats had one finish in the top six of an "A" Final, with
Justin Cucchi finishing fifth in the 400 IM with a time of 3:58.52.
Villanova finished 10th in the 200 medley relay, swimming 1:31.76. The group was comprised of
Andrew Kelley,
Francis Prikasky,
Nick Fiddler and
Stephen Krecsmar. Kelley also finished eighth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 49.50.
The 800 freestyle relay team of Cucchi,
Jake McIntyre,
Noah Chernik and Krecsmar finished seventh with a time of 6:48.11.
Michael Ackert took 14th in the 1m dive, scoring 238.95. Meanwhile,
Michael Perra placed 16th, scoring 229.00.
The final day of the Mountaineer Invitational will be on Saturday, Nov. 23.
