Wildcats Break Six Pool Records in Split Result Against Georgetown

Women are victorious over Georgetown while Men are defeated

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Both the Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams welcomed Georgetown to the Villanova Swim Complex on Saturday. The women's team defeated the Hoyas 201-87, while the men fell 132-167. The Wildcats knocked down six pool records on the day. They also took victories in 20 different events, with the women winning 14 and the men six.

Both the men's and women's 400 Medley Relay teams added their names to the record book in the opening swimming event. The women dominated the event, gapping the field by 6.23 seconds. The team of Alana Leen, Emily Herr, Anna Kilponen, and Carlota Colomer Guasch swam 3:40.05, the third fastest time in program history. On top of that, their relay time smashed the pool record by 7.24 seconds and Alana Leen's opening backstroke leg of 54.89 was a new pool record as well. The group of Max Christensen, Hugh Boris, Zach Sutter, and Carter Kobielski were the runner-up in their event but swam 3:18.55 to put themselves sixth on Villanova's all-time performance list.

Pool records fell in both women's breaststroke events. Emily Herr won the 100 Breast in 1:02.43, lowering both her personal best and the pool record. The sophomore also moved herself up to sixth on the all-time performance list to tie her current coach, Laura McGlaughlin. Annie Honkamp's pool record in the 200 Breast led a sweep in the event. The junior swam a personal best time of 2:15.64, which also moves her past Herr to eighth on the performance list. Herr was the runner up in the event (2:16.29), and Lyla Richards took third (2:21.51).

The fallen pool record in the women's 100 Fly also came curtesy of a Villanova sweep. Anna Kilponen won the event in a pool record 54.08. She was followed by Anna Farley (55.26) in second and Alyssa McHale (55.69) in third. Kilponen also won the 200 Fly, doing so in personal best fashion. The sophomore swam 1:59.87, lowering her best by one one- hundredths of a second.

The remaining newly broken pool record is owned by Carlota Colomer Guasch. The senior swam 23.23 in the 50 Free, winning the event.

The Wildcats won all four of the diving events. Nate Warson took both men's events, scoring 327.30 on the one-meter board and 367.73 on the three-meter board. Michelle Kasulka won the two women's events, earning 258.60 for the three-meter event and 249.98 for the one-meter. Katie Vaughan was the runner up in each event, totaling 245.03 in the three-meter and 220.05 in the one-meter.

Outside of the two pool record breaking sweeps, the women Wildcats swept three other events. Honkamp led the sweep in the 400 IM as well, swimming 4:21.02. Peri Gaguzis was the runner up (4:21.76) and Meghan Tiernan (4:22.50) took third. Gaguzis paced a sweep of her own in the 1000 Free. The senior swam 10:10.42 to win, followed by Kiersten Armstrong in second (10:15.19) and Riley Hull in third (10:20.49). Riley Hull also won the 500 Free, touching the wall at 5:00.26. In the 200 Free, Anna Farley won the event in 1:50.08, Marlene Blanke touched second at 1:50.92, and Amylia Higgins finished third at 1:51.74.

Hugh Boris had a pair of victories in the men's breaststroke events. He won the 200 Breast in 2:01.65 and the 100 Breast in 55.48. His 100 Breast time was the eighth best race in school history, tying his BIG EAST Championships preliminary race.

Justin Nowicki had a strong day, winning two of his individual events. He swam 3:58.71 to win the 400 IM, and 1:46.94 in the 200 Fly. His 200 Fly time was the fourth fastest race in school history, making him the owner of eight of the 10 fastest times in the event.

If Alana Leen's relay opening 100 Back time didn't break the school record, her individual race would have done the trick. She swam 55.07 to win the event, .29 seconds below the previous record. Leen was also Villanova's top backstroke swimmer over 200 yards, touching at 1:59.52 as the event's runner up.

The Wildcats closed out the meet with a pair of podium finishes in the 200 Free Relay. Farley, Colomer Guasch, Jana Strand, and Riley Kudlac won the women's event, finishing at 1:33.54. The team of Kobielski, Sutter, Max Kunisaki, and Gavin Peck were runners up in the men's event, swimming 1:23.41.

The women's team is back at home for their next competition, hosting Penn on Nov. 4th at the Villanova Swim Complex. The men next compete on Nov. 6, as both teams travel to State College, Pa. to face Penn State.
