Philadelphia, Pa. – Villanova will travel to North Broad Street Wednesday night to face No. 22 Temple. The Owls come into the contest 1-0 after beating Army on Saturday, while the Wildcats look for their first win of the season after losing to William and Mary.
This will be the 16
th all-time meeting between the schools, with Temple holding an 11-4 advantage.
"We are excited to get back on the field this Wednesday for a City 6 game, " said head coach
Jill Batcheller. "Temple has always been an aggressive, high tempo, and well coached team."
In the season opener for the Wildcats, junior midfielder
Addie Fischer scored on all four of her shots, leading the team in scoring. Villanova added scoring from a variety of newcomers and veterans. Seniors
Libby McKenna (2g),
Alexa Tsahalis (2g) and
Olivia Piccirilli (1g) each converted scoring chances, totaling five goals. For the newcomers, freshmen
Sydney Pappas and
Sami Carey each scored their first career goals, with Pappas scoring twice, while junior transfer
Cara Moreau scored the first goal of the season for Villanova.
Seniors
Caroline Curnal and
Hanna Driscoll both set career highs in the first game of the season, with Curnal recording 13 draw controls and Driscoll causing three turnovers.
The Owls come into this season ranked in the IWLCA Division I poll and remained at No. 22 with a 16-5 win over Army. Temple returns half of their starting lineup from their second round NCAA tournament team last season and five of their top nine point scorers. AAC Preseason Midfielder of the Year Belle Mastropietro netted four goals in the season opener, adding four draw controls. Graduate transfer goalie Annie Carroll looks to make an immediate impact for the Owls, after playing at UConn for three seasons.
