VILLANOVA, Pa.—Freshman
Anthony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) clinched the match with a win at No. 5 singles and Villanova (8-8) got back to .500 with a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Georgetown (1-1) at the Villanova Tennis Complex on Saturday afternoon. In the final home match of the season, the Wildcats overcame losing the doubles point to win four of the six singles matches and come away with their eighth win of the season.
"I am extremely proud of our guys who battled out of a tough hole after losing a tightly contested doubles point," Villanova head coach
Brad Adams said. "A win against Georgetown was a great way for
Daniel Martinez to conclude his home career on our West Campus courts. Our guys will have to continue to bring the same confidence and energy as we still have some tough matches in front of us and we want the momentum to keep building into the start of the BIG EAST Championships next week."
The winners for the Wildcats in singles play came from freshman
Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) in the No. 2 spot, freshman
Eitan Khromchenko (Manalapan, N.J.) in the No. 3 position, Prokurat in the No. 5 lineup spot and freshman
Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) by default in the No. 6 singles match. The visiting Hoyas led the match 3-2 before Villanova came back to tally wins in the No. 2 and No. 5 matches to record their second straight win.
Prokurat and sophomore
Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) teamed up for a 7-6 (2) win in the No. 3 doubles match, but Georgetown had already posted victories in the first two doubles matches to secure the first team point of the day. Sophomore
Alex Kim and Martinez fell in a 6-3 result at No. 1 doubles while junior
Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) and Robinson were narrowly defeated in a 6-4 decision in the No. 2 match.
When singles matches began, Nguyen was awarded a win by default and Khromchenko powered past Luke Ross for a 6-2, 6-3 victory which gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead in the match. After wins by the Hoyas at No. 1 and No. 4 singles against Kim and Martinez, Villanova evened the score for a second time at 3-3 with Robinson's 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 win over Mark Milter. Prokurat provided the clinching point with a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Harry Yang.
Next up for the Wildcats is a Sunday afternoon match at Penn.
