PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Two wins in the doubles matches clinched a team point for Villanova (5-8) but the Wildcats were unable to come away with any singles victories in a 6-1 loss to Penn (1-1) at the Hamlin Tennis Center on Friday afternoon. The highlight of the match was the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams each winning by 6-4 margins.
Junior
Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) and freshman
Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) continue to be a strong spot in doubles play for Villanova. The pair improved to 8-3 on the season with a win in the No. 2 doubles match. They have played in every spot in the lineup on the year and are now 2-1 in the No. 2 spot after their victory over Aditya Gupta and Aleks Huryn on Friday afternoon.
The other victory for the Wildcats came from a first-time pairing in the No. 3 match. Freshman
Anthony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) and sophomore
Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) were winners of Sameer Gangoli and Jeff Zucker. Villanova lost the No. 1 doubles match by a 6-2 margin as sophomore
Alex Kim (Cary, N.C.) and freshman
Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) were defeated by Zach Smith and Jason Hildebrandt.
Robinson went to a tiebreaker in his No. 2 singles match against Hildebrandt before falling in a 6-3, 4-6, 10-7 decision. Suarez played a close match in the No. 5 singles position but was defeated 6-4, 6-3 by Gangoli. The host Quakers also tallied straight-set wins in the No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 matches.
Another match awaits the Wildcats on Saturday as they take on NJIT at 1 p.m. from the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
