FLUSHING, N.Y.—A sweep of the doubles matches and five singles victories led Villanova (6-8) to a 6-1 victory over NJIT (7-4) at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing on Saturday afternoon. Freshmen
Anthony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) and
Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) went to three sets to win their respective singles matches as the Wildcats snapped a three-match losing streak. Saturday's contest came amidst a busy week for Villanova, which will play for the fourth time in five days when it takes on Drexel on Sunday afternoon.
"Today was a great performance by the guys," Villanova head coach
Brad Adams said. "NJIT is a very tough team with a lot of depth but our guys really stepped up their game and got the win. Thoday was a performance where our young team really got it together and realized the team's true potential. Everybody on our roster played a part in a win like this and all our guys should be proud of this performance. I know that their confidence and commitment will continue throughout the next week and help us hit our stride going into the BIG EAST Championship."
The tone for the match was set early as the Wildcats cruised to the doubles point and a 1-0 lead in the team score. Sophomore
Alex Kim (Cary, N.C.) and senior
Daniel Martinez (Coral Gables, Fla.) played the closest of the three doubles matches in the No. 1 spot where they defeated Josh Smith and Samuel Townes in a tiebreaker for a 7-6 victory.
Villanova's most successful doubles pairing this season – junior
Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) and freshman
Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) – powered past Abdullah Fouad and Amine El Kholti for a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Jones and Robinson ran their record on the year to 9-3, including a 4-1 record in the No. 2 position. Prokurat teamed with sophomore
Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) at No. 3 doubles and the pair blanked Ashwin Kanetkar and Ammar Fekry in a 6-0 decision.
Nguyen improved his record in singles matches this year to 6-4 with a 7-6, 5-7, 6-4 triumph over Adrian Tudor in the No. 6 lineup spot. Prokurat and Robinson each evened their season records at 6-6 with their respective wins, including Prokurat rallying past Fekry for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles. Robinson swept El Kholti in the No. 2 spot by set scores of 6-1 and 6-4.
The other wins in the match for Villanova came from freshman
Eitan Khromchenko (Manalapan, N.J.) at No. 3 singles and sophomore
Daniel Cheng (Los Angeles, Calif.) in the No. 4 match. Khromchenko defeated Townes (6-1, 6-4) and Cheng was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Kanetkar.
NJIT scored its only win in the No. 1 singles match were Fouad held off Kim for a 6-3, 6-2 decision.
Sunday's match at Drexel starts at 1 p.m..
