VILLANOVA, Pa.—Freshman
Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) outlasted his opponent at No. 2 singles in three sets as Villanova (4-5) rallied for a 4-3 win over Mount St. Mary's (1-4) at the West Campus Tennis Courts on Sunday afternoon. After losing the doubles point to start the match and splitting the first two singles matches which finished, the Wildcats posted three straight wins to clinch the team result. Robinson was a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 winner to tally the fourth and decisive team point in the victory.
Villanova played for the third straight day and the fourth time this week but persevered to gut out a win after falling behind The Mount early on. The matches in the No. 2 and No. 4 singles spots went to three sets in a well-played team match by both sides.
"Mount St. Mary's showed up for a battle today," Wildcats head coach
Brad Adams said. "I am impressed with how our guys dealt with the initial energy that their opponents brought as well as how they fought out of a 1-0 hole after the doubles point."
The sophomore doubles tandem of
Alex Kim (Cary, N.C.) and
Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) were defeated in a 6-2 decision in the first match of the day. Junior
Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) and Robinson moved up a spot to No. 2 doubles for the first time this season and were defeated, 6-3, as The Mount secured the doubles point. Those matches had already ended when sophomore
Daniel Cheng (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman
Noah Winton (Columbia, Mo.) tallied a 7-5 win in the third doubles match.
Freshman
Eitan Khromchenko (Manalapan, N.J.) was the first player to finish his singles match and he tied the team score at 1-1 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Elliot Stevens at No. 3 singles. Jackson Wood defeated Kim in the top lineup spot (6-4, 7-5) to put Mount St. Mary's back in front, 2-1.
The next three matches to finish were freshman
Antony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) at No. 6, freshman
Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) at No. 5 and Robinson at No. 2. Prokurat defeated Nick Huynh (7-5, 6-3) and Nguyen was a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Jarrett Karnibad to give Villanova its first lead of the day at 3-2. Robinson evened his singles record at 3-3 on the year with his three-set victory over Christos Dagklis.
"Throughout the match I was pleased with how our players fought and stayed composed mentally which gave us the upper hand in singles," Adams said. "This was a true team effort and is something that the guys can feel proud of."
The final singles match to finish was a thriller, with Cheng falling by the narrowest of margins to Parth Sharma in a 5-7, 6-4, 12-10 defeat in the fourth spot of the lineup.
Villanova returns to action at home next Sunday against La Salle at 3 p.m.
