Villanova falls to No. 13 Princeton in Home Opener

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova (2-2) fell to No. 13 Princeton (2-1) 18-13 in its home opener on Wednesday afternoon.

 

Six Wildcats scored in the matchup, led by junior attack Brittany Bruno who had a team-high five goals and one assists, followed by senior attack Katie Comerford who recorded a hat trick.

 

Bruno now leads the team with 18 points off of 12 goals and six assists.  

 

Sophomore midfielder Caroline Curnal had two goals, while senior attack Liz Trojan, sophomore midfielder Libby McKenna and junior attack Julianne Puckette each tallied one goal.

 

Curnal also won five draw controls.

 

Freshman Adeline Fisher tallied a team-high three assists against the Tigers, which was the first time she has recorded an assist in her collegiate career.

 

Sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Moro made a season-high 14 saves, allowing 18 goals on 44 shots for a save percentage of .438.

 

On the defensive end, senior Maggie Jennings and junior Kelsey Mentzer recorded two ground balls, while sophomore Sydney Frank had one and two caused turnovers.

 

As a team, Princeton outshot Villanova 44-33, had 14 turnovers to the Wildcat's 14, won the draw control battle 23-9, and had 16 free position shots to Villanova's two.

 

Tigers also had a 19-11 advantage for groundballs.

 

The Wildcats were 20-24 on clears in the game.

 

THE PLAY BY PLAY

 

The Wildcats started the game hot offensively early, with Bruno and Curnal putting Villanova ahead 3-1 less than five minutes into the game.

 

Princeton went on to score four unanswered goals to pull ahead 5-4 with 18 minutes remaining the first half.

 

Bruno, Trojan, Comerford combined to score four more goals, to go into the break down 11-8.

 

After cutting the lead to two at 12-10 with 20 minutes remaining in the second half, the Wildcats were outscored six to three to end the game.

 

Princeton is now 4-0 versus the Wildcats in the all-time series.

 

UP NEXT

 

The Wildcats will have a short turnaround, as they host local Philadelphia rival Drexel on Saturday at 1 p.m.
