VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Wildcats (2-3) fell to Drexel (2-2) 17-9 at home on Saturday afternoon in their second straight loss. The Dragon's 17 goals were a season-high for the team and they limited Villanova to its only single-digit score through its first five games.
Six different Wildcats scored in the matchup, led by senior midfielder Grainger Rosati who recorded a hat trick, followed by junior attack Brittany Bruno who scored twice.
Julianne Puckette, Kim McDonough, Katie Comerford and Caroline Curnal each had one a piece.
McDonough's goal was the senior midfielder's first point of the season.
Senior attack Ashley Lynch and Bruno also had two assists each.
Senior defender Maggie Jennings had a team-high four groundballs while Rosati had a team-high five draw controls.
The Wildcats were outshot 31-26, while Drexel held the advantage for ground balls at 15-11 and draw controls at 17-11. Villanova was 12-18 on clear attempts.
The Dragons also had the advantage with free-position shots at 10 compared to the Wildcats' four in the game.
Alexa Moro had nine saves in the game.
PLAY BY PLAY
Despite scoring the first goal of the game, which came from Bruno off of a Lynch pass, the Dragons responded by scoring five unanswered goals.
Comerford's goal with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half broke the scoring drought from Villanova.
Rosati scored twice more in the half, once off a Bruno pass, and Curnal once unassisted.
The Wildcats wet into the break down 9-5.
However, back-to-back goals from Puckette and Bruno to start the second half brought Villanova within two goals of the lead with the score at 9-7 with a little over 22 minutes left in the game.
Drexel and then Villanova traded goals to bring the score to 10-8, before the Dragons score another five uninterrupted goals in a row.
Rosati scored the last goal of the game for the Wildcats and Drexel finished the matchup with two back-to-back goals.
Drexel's last win against Villanova was in 2017.
Villanova has a 3-7 record against the Dragons in the past 10 matchups.
