Edwards Named to Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area Team

She is the first Wildcat named to the list since 2006

PHILADELPHIA – For just the second time in program history, Villanova Women's Tennis is represented on the Philly-SIDA Academic All-Area team with Sophia Edwards earning a nod, as announced on Monday.

Edwards is the first Wildcat to land a spot on the local list since Melissa Reed at the end of the 2005-06 season. She is one of seven student-athletes named to the team which is voted on by the sports communications offices of the institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.

This latest honor caps a big year for the graduate. The unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team pick went 12-6 in singles competition on the year and 6-11 in doubles, playing at the No. 1 spot in both for the 'Cats. She played a key role in helping the Wildcats reach their first-ever BIG EAST Championship match with wins over DePaul and to-seeded UConn in the quarterfinal and semifinals, respectively, before ultimately falling to Xavier, 4-0.

The Nokomis, Fla. native earned BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week honors back in April after picking up singles wins against Lafayette and Georgetown. She won 10 of her last 12 singles matches of the season with just one loss and an unfinished flight in that span. Of those 10 victories, six came against conference sides.
