CAYCE, S.C. - Fourth-seeded Villanova women's tennis took down five-seed DePaul 4-3 in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals on Friday before defeating top-seeded UConn 4-3 in the Semifinals on Saturday. The wins send the 'Cats to the BIG EAST Championship match on Sunday morning where they will face second-seeded Xavier at 9 a.m.
This will be the first time in program history that the Wildcats will play in the title match.
The Wildcats dropped the doubles point to the Blue Demons on Friday with Blue and White duos
Olivia Corcoran and
Jenna Stevens and
Maggie Gehrig and
Lauren Monti all falling in 6-0 results to Eleanor Nobbs and Roberta Sechi and Eleanor Cochran and Sasha Stula, respectively.
The 'Cats hustled to catch up in singles action with Monti taking down Cachran 6-2, 6-4 to even out the match 1-1. DePaul was then victorious to take the lead back with Nobbs defeating
Miriam Gondorova 7-6(6) ,6-0. No.1
Sophia Edwards went 6-2, 7-5 over Hannah Smith with Gehrig adding a point quickly after, going 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 over Goncharov to go ahead 3-2.
Corcoran fell to Stula 6-0, 6-4, 6-4 against DePaul's Stula to put it at 3-3 for a deciding match at the No. 5 spot. Stevens fought hard going 7-5, 2-6 before clinching the match 6-2 in the third set.
That win over the Blue Demons sent Villanova to Saturday Semifinals action, marking the first appearance for the 'Cats since 2021.
They ultimately met the challenge in another close match, upsetting top-seeded UConn by another 4-3 margin.
It started in déjà vu fashion for the Wildcats, dropping the doubles point for a second consecutive day. At No. 2, Corcoran and Stevens fell to Isabel Petri Bere and Chloe Lomans, 6-4. The No. 3 duo of Gehrig and Monti dropped a 6-4 decision to Cameron Didion and Isabella Asenov to round out the opening point.
No.1 singles was retired to level the match 1-1 before Gehrig picked up a win at No. 3, 6-0, 6-4, to take the lead. After a Huskies win on court five with Stevens falling to Lomans 7-5, 6-3, Corcoran answered with a No. 2 win over Bere, 6-3, 6-1.
Gondorova went to the third set on the fourth court before falling to Didion, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 5-3. Monti pushed through at No. 6 to clinch the Championship appearance, finishing 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 over Asenov.
