Box Score STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Villanova women's lacrosse started its spring break with a trip to Long Island, suffering a 20-8 defeat to the No. 12 Stony Brook Seawolves on Saturday.
Sydney Pappas led the way for Villanova (2-4), finding the back of the net four times on just six shots. Sami Carey added a pair of goals and an assist in the matchup, while Sophia Corretjer contributed a goal and a helper for the 'Cats.
Redshirt freshman Bella Piselli recorded her first point as a Wildcat, converting a free position goal in the third quarter.
Makenzie Fisher made a team-best four saves for the Wildcats in second half goaltender duties and Cate Gallagher stopped three shots as the starting netminder.
Stony Brook scored to open the game before Pappas evened the tally at one-all, taking on multiple defenders and beating the keeper for the first Villanova score of the game. The Seawolves added a 5-0 run from that point for a big lead, then it was Corretjer firing one home unassisted to end the period at 6-2.
After SBU began the second period with a goal, the Wildcats' most common connection once again came through as Carey fed Pappas to get the 'Cats their third of the day. Stony Brook added a pair of tallies before Pappas delivered another, recording a first half hat trick on a free position attempt.
Carey registered her second point of the contest by finishing off a Corretjer feed before the Seawolves wrapped up the stanza with two goals to make it an 11-5 halftime score.
Stony Brook provided the first point of the third quarter, but the 'Cats answered with a pair, the first coming out of the crosse of Piselli who used a nifty move to strike on a free position shot.
Carey utilized another freshman's feed to put one away, taking a Mary Moore dime and working her way into the middle before beating the netminder for a 12-7 score.
Much like the first quarter, it was a long SBU run generating some distance between the squads before Pappas scored her fourth with a free position shot for a 16-8 score after three.
The Seawolves managed the only four scores of the fourth quarter, earning the running clock on their way to a 20-8 victory.
UP NEXT: The Wildcats will remain up in the Empire State for a Wednesday night contest, traveling into the Big Apple for a matchup against Columbia.
