CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Villanova volleyball followed up its five-set win on Friday with another match that went the distance, this time falling to the Xavier Musketeers in five (25-17, 25-22, 23-25, 19-25, 8-15) on Sunday afternoon at the Cintas Center.
Kiera Booth led the match with 16 kills while Abby Harrell contributed her fifth career double-double at 15 kills and 11 digs and Madeline Barber put down 12 terminations for Villanova (16-10, 7-7 BIG EAST).
Andrea Campos totaled her second double-double in as many matches and seventh this season at a match-high 48 assists and 10 digs, with Elizabeth Feczko and Taryn Whittingham tying for a team-best 15 digs.
It was a sideout battle to open the match, with the teams trading points for much of the first set up until 11-10. But the Wildcats strung together four in a row, forcing a Xavier timeout and generating some distance between the squads. With a balanced offensive attack powering the 'Cats, it was a 25-17 first frame victory for the visitors.
There were far more runs in the second stanza, as the Wildcats stacked three to start, Xavier answered with six and each side added a 4-0 stretch as the period neared the midway point. Villanova finally tied it at 14-all, then clawed their way into a lead with a 5-1 string and kept the momentum around two XU timeouts to make it two sets to none.
The Musketeers secured an early advantage in the third frame, going up 7-3 and ballooning the advantage to 16-9. The 'Cats stormed back to tie the match at 21-21 thanks to an 8-1 stretch, but couldn't finish the job as Xavier edged them out 25-23.
Neither side could establish a lead above two throughout the first 28 points of the fourth period, up until XU moved to an 18-14 edge to draw closer to a decisive fifth. Villanova couldn't get closer the rest of the way, and the Musketeers leveled the match with a 25-19 set win.
After the squads traded points to start the final frame, Xavier utilized a 6-0 run to gain all the momentum they needed, moving to a 15-8 fifth set victory to complete the reverse sweep.
