Villanova Falls To DePaul in Weekend Opener

Abby Harrell and Andrea Campos each put forth double-doubles

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova volleyball suffered a loss at Jake Nevin Field House on Friday night, falling to the DePaul Blue Demons in four sets (16-25, 25-23, 19-25, 19-25).

Abby Harrell contributed her seventh double-double of the year for Villanova (16-11, 7-8 BIG EAST), totaling a team-high 14 kills along with 14 digs.

Kiera Booth added 13 kills for her 14th double-digit kill performance of the year, while Andrea Campos put forth her team-best eighth double-double with a match-high 40 assists and 10 digs.

After the teams traded points through the opening 10 points of the match, DePaul used an attack error and two service aces to grab the first real advantage of frame one at 13-10 to force a Villanova pause. The Blue Demons strung together four of the next five which generated the final VU timeout, weathered a Wildcat run and served their way to a set one win.

Down 6-4 to begin the second set, the 'Cats went on a 4-0 run to establish an edge and got up to 17-13 before a DPU break. The Blue Demons utilized a 6-1 stretch to take a lead of their own, but Villanova refused to roll over and a pair of Madeline Barber kills gave the Wildcats the period to draw level in the match.

Neither side could establish a big advantage for most of the third stanza with the set being within two up through 34 points. DePaul then took five of the next six and carried that momentum the rest of the way, picking up the frame 25-19.

The Blue Demons started the fourth period hot, jumping out to 4-0 and 10-4 leads before a VU pause. From there DePaul led for the remainder of the match, sweeping the season series between the squads.

UP NEXT: The Wildcats have one final home contest remaining this season, hosting the Marquette Golden Eagles at Jake Nevin Field House on Saturday for Senior Night.
