Pappas' Career Day Carries Villanova Past UC Davis 12-10

Villanova, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats defeated the UC Davis Aggies 12-10 on a windy Saturday afternoon. The win pushes Villanova's record to 4-7, while UC Davis falls to 4-5 on the season. 

Freshman Sydney Pappas led Villanova offensively, scoring a career high five goals against UC Davis. 

The Aggies jumped ahead early with a 2-0 lead at the 9:31 mark of the opening period. Junior Cara Moreau got things going for the Wildcats, after senior Libby McKenna found her across the point. Pappas would tie things at 2-2 after classmate Sami Carey dished a pass from behind the net. 

UC Davis added a goal shortly before the end of the first, to take a 3-2 lead into the second. 

Pappas would continue her career day, opening the second frame with her second goal, off another McKenna assist. UC Davis would answer with two of their own, to make the score 5-3 with 6:45 left before the break. Villanova would string together four consecutive goals, as Pappas and senior Caroline Curnal each netted two apiece. 

The 'Cats would take a 7-5 lead into halftime, outshooting the Aggies 22-12 in the first two periods. 

After the Aggies scored to open the third quarter, Pappas and Curnal would each score to make Villanova's lead 9-6. Moreau was credited with an assist on Curnal's goal.

UC Davis' Kendall Seifert opened the final frame with two goals of her own, leading the team with four in the game, cutting the Wildcats lead down to one at 9-8 with 9:19 to play. Back to back goals for Villanova kept the Aggies out of reach, as seniors Olivia Piccirili and Alexa Tsahalis converted. 

With her third draw control midway through the fourth period, senior Sydney Frank moved into fifth place all-time for career draw controls with 124. She ranks second on the team this season with 25. 

The final 7:46 saw the teams trade goals, as UC Davis' Alex Agnew scored twice in the final minutes. In goal for Villanova, Alexa Moro earned the victory, stopping eight shots.

For Pappas, she fired off a career high 12 shots, with eight on goal to go with her five scores. Her two ground balls are also mark a career best. On defense, Mary Kate Conniff had career highs across the board, causing three turnovers and scooping up five ground balls. 

Villanova will return to action on April 2 when they host Georgetown to being conference play. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. with streaming through Flo Sports.
