Wildcats Downed By No. 4 Maryland 19-7

College Park, Md. - The Villanova women's lacrosse team fell to the No. 4 Maryland Terrapins Sunday evening by a final score of 19-7. The loss puts Villanova at 2-6 on the season, while Maryland stays unbeaten at 6-0. This was the first ever meeting between the schools.

Coming off their midweek win against La Salle on Wednesday, the Wildcats traveled to Maryland for their fourth of five straight away games. The match, originally scheduled for Saturday, was moved indoors to the Jones-Hill House on Sunday, which marked the first time in program history that Maryland hosted a game indoors.

Senior midfielder Caroline Curnal moved into second place all-time at Villanova for career draw controls in the loss. Securing her fourth draw early in the second period, she passed Shawna Giust who sat in second with 158 career draw controls. Curnal led all players in Sunday's game with 11 total, the most Maryland has allowed to a single player this season.

The Terps opened with back-to-back early goals taking a 2-0 lead at the 12:04 mark of the first period. One minute later, Curnal would put the 'Cats on the board with her first of three goals. A Sydney Pappas goal followed, off a pass from Alexa Tsahalis, which tied things at 2-2 midway through the opening frame. Maryland would go on a five-goal run bridging the first and second periods.

With the deficit 7-2, the Ridgefield, Connecticut native Curnal ripped her second goal of the game to stop the Maryland run. After three goals from Maryland, senior Olivia Piccrilli scored her sixth goal of the season to make the score 10-4. Curnal notched her third of the game and assisted on a Sami Carey goal late in the third period. The Terrapins took a 13-6 lead into the fourth period.

In the final frame, Jenna Pastore scored on a woman-up opportunity, off a dish from Pappas. Maryland would score the game's final six goals.

Aurora Cordingley totaled 11 points for Maryland, as the IWLCA Preseason All-American graduate student totaled six goals and five assists. On defense, Abby Bosco had three of Maryland's 13 caused turnovers in the contest.

Villanova will finish their road trip at Lafayette on Wednesday. Opening draw is set for 2 p.m. at Fischer Stadium in Easton.
