Baskin Nets a Career High Six Goals as Wildcats Comeback Falls Short at Brown

Providence, R.I.- The Villanova Wildcats closed the game on a 6-0 run to get within one but fell to the Brown Bear by a final of 15-14 on Tuesday afternoon.  Graduate transfer Brett Baskin had a career best day netting six goals and dishing out two assists for eight points.

Brown's Brian Antonelli scored his first of five to open the game followed by a goal from teammate Griffin King to go up 2-0 with 10:00 to go.  Villanova answered with three straight goals to go ahead 3-2.  Tucker Goodelle netted the first, Baskin the second and Daly the third over a five-minute span.  The Bears scored two more before the end of the quarter to go up 4-3. 

Baskin tied the game up at four to open the second, but Brown would jump ahead thanks to a five goal un.  Antonelli would score two of the goals during the run while Devon McLane, who had a game high nine points, would dish out a pair of assists.  Brown led 9-4 with just over seven minutes to go in the quarter.  The Wildcats and Bears both netted two more goals before halftime.  Baskin completed a first-half hat trick with a goal at the 5:42 mark and Luke Keating scored his first of the day on a dish from Matt Licata to make it 11-6 Brown at halftime

Antonelli scored the first goal in the third on a pass from McLane and then returned the favor setting up McLane just minutes later.  Baskin netted his fourth of the day on a pass from Matt Campbell followed by Campbell scoring his first of the game five minutes later.  McLane scored what would be Brown's final goal of the day at the 2:03 mark of the third to make it 15-8. 

The final 17 minutes of the game was all Villanova, the Wildcats score six goals to fight back from being down as many of seven.  Baskin would get the run going with his fifth goal of the game at the 1:21 mark making it 15-9 Bears at the end of the third. 

It only took a matter of seconds in the fourth to get Villanova's first goal, it was Baskin this time setting up Austin Fraser to make it a five-goal game.  At 11:35 Campbell dished it to Keating and just over a minute later it would be Campbell scoring his second on a dish from Baskin to bring it within three.  Chet Comizio had a strong defensive spot causing a turnover, getting the ground balls, and running down field to get the ball to Licata.  There the sophomore was able to score to make it a two-goal game with 5:57 to play.  With just 27 seconds to play Keating dished it to Baskin during Villanova's second success EMO of the game to bring it within one. 

Villanova won the faceoff with Stevie Jones picking up the ground ball and dishing it to Justin Coppola who took a shot wide with 16 seconds to go.  J.P. Basile then followed up with a wide shot of his own before the Wildcats call timeout with 10 seconds left.  In the final seconds Keating overthrew the pass to Campbell which would lead to a turnover and make the final 15-14 Brown.

Coppola from the faceoff x was 16-of-29 (.552) with seven ground balls while Will Vitton had 12 saves in goal.  Tripp Robinson had three ground balls and two caused turnovers while Comizio finished with four ground balls.
Villanova will return home for four straight games beginning this Saturday against the Hofstra Pride.  First faceoff is scheduled for 1:00 P.M.
