Villanova, Pa- The Villanova Wildcats picked up their third win of the season on Saturday afternoon when they defeated the Hofstra Pride 8-6. Villanova out scored Hofstra 7-1 in the second half to rally back.
Hofstra jumped out to an early lead scoring the first two goals in just over three minutes of action. Villanova's
Matt Campbell, who would finish with four goals on the day, score what would be the Wildcats only first half goal at the 10:58 mark. The Pride closed out the first quarter netting three goals to go up 5-1. Neither team would score in the second quarter making it 5-1 Hofstra at the half. Villanova was limited in their first half scoring due to Hofstra's Mac Gates having 10 saves at halftime, eight of those came in the first quarter.
The Wildcats scored first in the third when
J.P. Basile dished it to
Patrick Daly at the 14:13 mark to make it a three-goal game. Hofstra's Bryan McIntosh launched a shot from over 50 yards out that went into the cage to make it 6-2, this would be the Pride's last goal of the game.
Basile once again brought the score withing three on a dish from
Luke Keating on an extra-man opportunity followed by Campbell netting his second before the end of the third to make it 6-4. Campbell would complete the hat trick with scoring the first goal of the fourth quarter. Daly would follow up and score the game tying and the go-ahead goals at the 6:26 and 4:57 mark to give the Wildcats their first lead of the game. Campbell netted his fourth of the day with just over two minutes to play to make the final 8-6.
Justin Coppola went 13-for-17 (.765) from the faceoff x and had a game high nine ground balls. The Wildcats out shot Hofstra 52-to-17 and collected 18 more ground balls.
Next Saturday the Wildcats will host the Penn Quakers. First-faceoff inside Villanova Stadium is scheduled for 1:00 P.M.
