Cornell Defeats Villanova 14-9

Villanova, Pa. - On a windy Saturday afternoon, the Cornell Big Red (1-0) defeated the Villanova Wildcats (0-3) by a final score of 14-9. With the loss, Villanova is now 1-5 all-time against Cornell. 

The Big Red were aggressive from the first draw, holding a 10-4 shot advantage in the first period. To start the game, the visitors scored three unanswered until the 3:05 mark, when midfielder Libby McKenna scored Villanova's first of the game. An assist was credited to Alexa Tsahalis. Cornell would answer with three more goals and went into the second period with a 6-1 lead. 

Opening the second period, Addie Fischer swung the momentum in favor of the Wildcats, converting on two free-position attempts, to cut the deficit to 6-3. For the final seven minutes of the half Cornell would go on another scoring run, this time of four goals, and took a 10-3 lead into the break.

Coming out of halftime, goalkeeper Alexa Moro kept Villanova in the game with numerous spectacular saves throughout the final two periods. The 'Cats held a 3-1 scoring advantage in the third frame, due in large part to Moro's stellar play. In the period, three different players scored for Villanova, Fischer scored her third of the game, while Tsahalis and Caroline Curnal would each score one.

Curnal, Fischer and Tsahalis would lead the team with three points each, while Curnal had a game high eight draw controls. 

Cornell bolstered their lead to being the fourth period with two quick goals, increasing their lead to 13-6 with 12:26 left in the game. Villanova showed fight in the final frame, scoring the games last four goals, while Moro saved five shots down the stretch. Curnal and Tsahalis would each score their second, while Cara Moreau also found the back of the net. 

Villanova will face George Washington in their next match, on Wednesday, February 23. The game is scheduled for 12:00 PM and willbe streamed on FloSports.
