VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova women's volleyball suffered a defeat to the UConn Huskies at the Jake Nevin Field House on Saturday night, falling in four sets (25-20, 22-25, 22-25, 17-25).
"We played really hard tonight," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "We just weren't able to execute in the crucial times of the match, and that was the difference."
Three players put up double-digit kills for Villanova (7-17, 3-9 BIG EAST), with Kiera Booth tallying 11 kills on a .458 hitting percentage. Riley Homer (10 kills, 11 digs) and Andrea Campos (18 assists, 10 digs) each posted double-doubles.
Tara Garvey totaled her third straight double-digit kill performance with 10 terminations, and Elizabeth Feczko led all players with 17 digs and a career-high three service aces.
Villanova snatched momentum to start the match, beginning the opening stanza on a run of 8-4. Despite a UConn timeout, the 'Cats expanded their lead to 11-6 before the Huskies closed the gap to 20-19. But VU took five of the final six points and ended UConn's streak of 13 straight set wins with a 25-20 victory.
It was again a hot start for the Wildcats in the second frame, taking an 8-2 advantage. But the Huskies battled back and knotted the score at 17-17, then secured a 21-19 lead that they wouldn't relinquish en route to a tie match.
VU used a 5-0 run with Feczko serving to take an early advantage in the third period, but UConn stormed back to go up 8-5 and moved to a 20-13 lead. The 'Cats brought it back to a one point deficit, but the Huskies got the scores they needed to pick up a 25-22 win.
Connecticut was the team that secured an early lead in the fourth, going up 10-4 to start the frame. The visitors dominated the stanza, leading by as many as eight and taking the match in four sets.
