CHICAGO, Ill. – Villanova University volleyball suffered a loss on Friday night, dropping a three-set match (25-22, 25-19, 25-20) to the DePaul Blue Demons.
"We played really hard tonight but DePaul is a tough matchup for us," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "We'll have to be much better tomorrow to beat a good Marquette team."
Kiera Booth paced Villanova (7-18, 3-10 BIG EAST) with 10 kills on a .429 hitting percentage, while Riley Homer totaled nine terminations in an error-free performance. VU libero Elizabeth Feczko led all participants with 14 digs in the match, while Andrea Campos put up a team-high 24 assists.
It was an evenly-matched opening stanza, as neither side could establish a large lead early. DePaul eventually went up 18-15, but VU countered with a 5-1 run to retake momentum. The teams traded leads multiple times through the remainder of the frame, up until DPU strung together a few points and moved to a 25-22 victory.
The Blue Demons jumped out to leads of 5-1 and 7-2 to start the second period, then going up 16-9. The 'Cats staved off three straight set points, but DPU got the point it needed and went up two sets to none.
Villanova took four of the first five points in the third stanza, but DePaul battled back to tie the score multiple times. After the score was knotted at 14-14, the Blue Demons used a 4-0 run to secure an advantage and continued to a sweep of the match.
