Wildcats Pick Up Third BIG EAST Win With Defeat of Providence

Four players total double-digit kill numbers to power VU attack

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Villanova volleyball team hosted Providence on Friday evening, dispatching the Friars in four sets (20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-18) at Jake Nevin Field House.

"Tonight was a good, balanced win," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "Riley Homer and Kiera Booth were great for us today. We will still have to be better when we play UConn tomorrow."

Homer and Booth led the way for Villanova (7-16, 3-8 BIG EAST) with 11 kills each, while Madeline Barber and Tara Garvey also totaled double-digit terminations with 10.

Andrea Campos notched a match-high 33 assists, while Elizabeth Feczko led all players with 22 digs. Junior Angelle Diamond made her first appearance of the season, putting up three kills on eight total attacks.

The VU victory continues the Wildcats' dominance over Providence, now owning a 16-6 record and a three-match winning streak against the Friars. Villanova is now 9-1 at home all-time against PC, with Providence's last win at Jake Nevin coming in 1999.

It was a tight first frame, as neither side could establish a large advantage despite efficient offenses in the early part of the set. There were seven ties in the stanza, up until Providence broke the tie with a 6-0 run and moved to a 25-20 win.

Villanova jumped out to an early lead in the second, going up 10-7 to begin the period. VU's lead ballooned to as much as nine, and despite a late push from the Friars to tighten the score to three, the 'Cats went on to a 25-21 victory.

The third set began with a Providence advantage, as the Friars got out to a 7-4 lead in the stanza. The Wildcats battled back to take control of the frame, using an 11-4 run to snatch the momentum. PC tied the score at 17-17, but Villanova finished the period on a 7-3 run to win 25-20.

The 'Cats were dominant to start the fourth, securing leads of 4-0 and 9-2 in the early stages of the set. VU cruised to a 25-18 victory in the period, picking up a third win in conference play.

UP NEXT: The 'Cats finish off their four-match homestand with a bout against UConn, taking on the Huskies at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29.
