WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Villanova women's lacrosse team traveled to Washington, D.C., on Sunday afternoon where they lost to the Georgetown Hoyas by a score of 18-8. With the loss, Villanova falls to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in BIG EAST play, while the Hoyas improve to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in league action.
Georgetown came out strong scoring the first four goals of the game to take an early 4-0 lead. After junior
Caroline Curnal (Ridgefield, Conn.) got the Wildcats on the board, the Hoyas tallied two consecutive goals to lead 6-1 with 15:06 remaining in the opening half.
Villanova senior
Katie Comerford (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) scored on an unassisted goal to make it a 6-2 game at the 10:06 mark. The Wildcat momentum was short lived, as Georgetown got ack-to-back goals from Mary Pagano and Ali Diamond to increase the lead to 8-2.
Junior
Olivia Piccirilli (Davidsonville, Md.) scored for Villanova to cut the Georgetown advantage to 8-3, before the Hoyas scored the last two goals of the half to take a 10-3 lead into intermission.
The Wildcats started the second half in fine fashion scoring two goals in the first 1:45 to slice the Hoya lead to 10-5. The Villanova goals were credited to Comerford and
Haley Driscoll (Denville, N.J.). Villanova continued to generate more offensive pressure after the two quick goals, but Georgetown goalie Emily Gaven came up with some timely saves.
Georgetown took control of the game with four straight goals to open-up a 14-5 lead with 19:44 remaining. Jordyn Sabourin led the Hoya charge with two of the four goals.
Following a goal by Villanova's
Adeline Fischer (Glen Arm, Md.), the Hoyas put the game away with three consecutive goals to take a commanding 17-6 lead at the 9:05 mark.
Villanova got two late goals from
Jenna Greason (Ashburn, Va.) and
Alexa Tsahalis (Mahwah, N.J.).
In the loss, Comerford led the Wildcats with two goals and five shots on goal.
Caroline Phelps (Natick, Mass.) and
Hanna Driscoll (Denville, N.J.) tallied a team-high four groundballs, while goalie
Alexa Moro (Westport, Conn.) registered 10 saves.
Georgetown out shot Villanova by a 40-21 margin.
Villanova returns to action on Friday, March 26, when the Marquette Golden Eagles visit Villanova Stadium. Game time is set for noon.
