BETHLEHEM, Pa.—Freshman
Anthony Prokurat (Manalapan, N.J.) was a winner in the No. 6 singles match, but Villanova (3-5) lost a 6-1 decision to Lehigh (2-0) in a match that was closer than the final score would indicate at the Ulrich Varsity Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon. The lone wins in the match for the Wildcats came at No. 3 doubles and in Prokurat's singles victory.
Prokurat improved to 3-3 in singles action on the season with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jordan Paul in the sixth spot in the lineup. Two of the other singles matches went to three sets and even then needed extra points to be decided. Freshman
Eitan Khromchenko (Manalapan, N.J.) won the opening set at No. 3 singles before being outlasted by Jeremy Learner in a 6-7, 6-2, 11-9 defeat. Fellow freshman
Ryan Nguyen (Oakton, Va.) was locked in a good match in the No. 5 spot before falling to senior Jacob Edelchik in a 7-5, 3-6, 10-8 decision.
The host Mountain Hawks opened the match by narrowly winning the doubles point. Junior
Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) and freshman
Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) improved to 5-1 on the year with a 6-3 win over Learner and Steven Nazaroff at the No. 3 spot in the doubles lineup, but Lehigh scored 6-2 and 6-3 victories in the first two matches. Sophomores
Alex Kim (Cary, N.C.) and
Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) played at No. 1 doubles while the freshman tandem of Khromchenko and Prokurat teamed together for only the second time this season in the No. 2 match.
When the action shifted to singles, Zack Elliott defeated Kim (6-1, 6-1) in the top spot, Robinson fell to Harry Want (6-1, 6-2) in the No. 2 position and sophomore
Daniel Cheng (Los Angeles, Calif.) lost by scores of 6-2, 6-2 to Learner at No. 4.
This has been a busy week for a young Villanova team, which previously faced Temple on Wednesday morning and Monmouth on Friday afternoon. A fourth match of the week awaits the Wildcats on Sunday when they host Mount St. Mary's in an outdoor match beginning at 12 p.m. on West Campus.
