CHERRY HILL, N.J.—In the first of three matches on the schedule this week, Villanova (3-3) was defeated 7-0 by Temple (4-1) at the Cherry Hill Racquet Club on Wednesday morning. The lone win for the Wildcats was a victory by junior
Matthew Jones (Dallas, Texas) and freshman
Josh Robinson (Potomac, Md.) in the No. 3 doubles match.
The host Owls clinched the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to open the match. Jones and Robinson prevailed in their No. 3 doubles match against Marin Delmas and Juan Araoz to win a 7-5 decision. The pairing of Jones and Robinson has been a successful one for the Wildcats in recent outings, as Jones and Robinson are now 4-0 as doubles partners with all four wins coming in the No. 3 spot in the lineup.
The sophomore tandem of
Alex Kim (Cary, N.C.) and
Justin Suarez (Manila, Philippines) lost a 6-2 decision at No. 1 doubles, as did sophomore
Daniel Cheng (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman
Noah Winton (Columbia, Mo.) in the No. 2 spot. Villanova had won eight consecutive doubles matches in its last three dual competitions prior to today's outing against the Owls.
Each of the six singles matches ended in straight sets, with freshman
Eitan Khromchenko (Manalapan, N.J.) dropping a close 6-4, 6-3 match in the No. 3 spot. The defeat snapped his four-match winning streak to open the season. Kim lost his No. 1 singles match (6-0, 6-0) to Delmas and Robinson was defeated at No. 2 doubles by Léo Raquin (6-4, 6-2).
In the bottom half of the lineup Cheng lost a 6-1, 6-3 decision in the fourth position, senior
Daniel Martinez (Coral Gables, Fla.) fell by scores of 6-0 and 6-4 in the No. 5 match and Suarez was defeated (6-0, 6-2) in the sixth spot.
Villanova returns home to face Monmouth on Saturday at 1 p.m.
