A goal scored midway through the first half was the difference as Seton Hall downed Villanova 1-0 on its home pitch in South Orange, N.J. Wednesday night. The loss drops Villanova to 1-5 overall, 1-3 BIG EAST, while the Pirates improved to 4-1-2 overall, 2-1-1 BIG EAST.
Goalkeeper Carson Williams made four saves on the night for the Wildcats. Sophomore Lyam Mackinnon generated five shots for Villanova.
"I thought we carried out our game plan in the first half," said Villanova head coach Tom Carlin. "We created some opportunities but we had some trouble in stringing passes together to get on the right end of things. Seton Hall did a very good job in the transition game."
Seton Hall grabbed the advantage midway through the first half. The Pirates scored the game's first goal when Luca Dahn and James Boote set up Paavo Riihjarvi at 27:02. That made it 1-0.
The Pirates owned a 16-8 advantage on shots on the night.
Villanova game against Connecticut, originally slated for Saturday, has been pushed back to Wednesday, March 31 at 3 p.m. The match originally slated for that date, a non-league affair with Delaware, has been postponed.
The Wildcats will next see action next Wednesday at Georgetown.
"We've had a series of injuries which has left us light on numbers," said Carlin. "Getting a few days to regroup and prepare for the second half of the season is going to be very helpful."
