No. 3 Georgetown Rallies Past Wildcats 3-2 in Overtime

MacKinnon scored two goals for Villanova

Villanova led No. 3 ranked Georgetown into the 81st minute but the Hoyas rallied late to record a 3-2 overtime victory over the Wildcats Wednesday in Washington, D.C. Sophomore forward Lyam MacKinnon scored a pair of goals for the Wildcats and redshirt junior Carson Williams provided superb play in net.

After two saves by Villanova's Williams in the first 6:15 of the match the Wildcats were able to hold firm in a 0-0 duel. Midway through the first half came a breakthrough on a play that began with a free kick. The sequence ended with a Wildcats goal by Lyam MacKinnon, his first of the season, at 26:08 off a shot into the lower right corner of the net.

Freshman back Jack Bonas was credited with an assist on the score.

The Wildcats (1-6 overall, 1-4 BIG EAST) carried that lead into halftime despite Georgetown (4-0-1 overall, 4-0-1 BIG EAST) having the edge in a number of key statistical categories. The Hoyas owned a 7-1 advantage in shots and an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

Early in the second half, Villanova got its second shot on goal of the afternoon and the result was the same – a goal by MacKinnon. The sophomore buried this chance into the lower left corner of the net at 48:11 to stake the Wildcats to their largest lead of 2020-21 and their first multi-goal game of the campaign.

At 56:36 Georgetown cut its deficit in half, when Derek Dodson scored an unassisted goal for the Hoyas. The Wildcats maintained that advantage into the 81st minute when an own goal by Villanova under heavy pressure from the Hoyas allowed Georgetown to draw level in the match at two.

Another key Williams save – his fifth of the day – in the 84th minute kept the game tied and overtime soon was at hand.

The decisive goal in overtime came off a run down the left side by Georgetown's Jacob Montes. Montes worked his way towards the goal only to have his initial shot stopped by Williams. The ball rolled back to Montes, who again sent a low shot that Williams deflected.

The rebound of that missed shot rolled toward the middle of the 18-yard box where Paul Rothrock was waiting. He netted the golden goal on a low shot into the net at 97:37.

Villanova will next see action Saturday when it visits Providence for a BIG EAST battle in Rhode Island.
