Wildcats Defeat Blue Hens to Win the Delaware Invite

NEWARK, Del. – The Villanova University women's volleyball team defeated the Delaware Blue Hens 3-1 to win the Delaware Invite. The Wildcats improve to 3-0 on the season.

Head coach Josh Steinbach on the win, "Road wins are really good to get and so winning here feels pretty good. We clearly have a lot to improve but I think this group plays really hard."

The Wildcat with the most kills was freshman right side hitter Sanaa Barnes with 16 kills. She also had two service aces and eight digs.

Steinbach on Barnes, "Sanaa had an outstanding match and is pretty sophisticated offensively for a young player."

The match was tied 18-18 before the Wildcats would go on a 7-2 run to win the opening set 25-20. There were five ties and one lead change during the set.

The second set was back and forth between the Wildcats and Blue Hens. With the score tied at 11-11, Villanova went on a 14-7 run to take the second set 25-18.

The Wildcats got an early lead to the third set, but the Delaware battled their way back to get the set tied at 20. Delaware would win the next five points to win the set 25-20.

In the fourth set the Villanova jumped out to an early lead of 11-7 and they never looked back. Senior middle blocker Amanda Pedersen-Henry got the final point to win the set and match for the Wildcats. She had 10 kills for the match and has had double digit kills in every match this season.

Junior libero Regan Lough had 34 digs and was one of four Wildcats with double digit digs. Junior setter Emma Decker had 41 assists which is her second game in a row with 40 or more assists.

Next match for Villanova is on Friday August 31st against Dartmouth at the Kristin Dickman Memorial in Annapolis, Maryland. The Wildcats will play two matches the following day at 10:00 a.m. against Alabama and then at 7:00 p.m. against Navy.
