Final Stats
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Junior Cindy Koza (Garnet Valley, Pa.) and sophomore Becky Gardner (Centerport, N.Y.) scored two goals each and the Villanova back field came up big as the Wildcats fended off a late rally from Lafayette and defeated the Leopards, 6-4, on Friday evening at Villanova Stadium. Villanova improves to 2-11 overall and 2-4 in the Patriot League while Lafayette drops to 0-11.
Koza and Gardner opened the scoring on back-to-back free position goals. Gardner's game less than a minute into the contest at 29:12. Koza's goal came just over five minutes later, at 24:02.
Gardner scored again at the 20:35 mark, with Koza picking up an assist. Senior Amy Rocap (Vienna, Va.) was the next to strike, less than one minute later, after she flicked a shot in from freshman Alex Garvey (Summit, N.J.). Koza scored her next goal 20 seconds later off an assist from freshman Stevie McFadden (Reisterstown, Md.). When the dust finally settled, Villanova had put away five straight goals in just under ten minutes to give itself a 5-0 advantage over visiting Lafayette.
The Leopards finally found an answer at 18:25 with Madalyn Booth scoring the first of her two goals.
Villanova scored its final goal of the evening with just under five minutes to go it the first half. Sophomore Christina Bahrs (Oceanport, N.J.) set up an unassisted shot and fired a goal in the net past Jaclyn Kushner.
The Wildcats were held scoreless in the second half, but it had no affect on the outcome, as Lehigh came up with three more goals before suffering a close defeat. Samantha Ziegler and Natalie Kuhnert each came up with a goal and Booth scored her second with 9:32 to go. Kuhnert also had two assists to go with her one score.
Villanova held the ball for the last four minutes of the contest, effectively running out the clock to ensure its victory.
Sophomore goalie Jess Brozena (West Long Branch, N.J.) came up with five crucial saves in the second half and the defense held off last ditch efforts from Lafayette as Villanova ran out the clock with the ball in its possession.
The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, April 23, when they host City Six rival St. Joseph's at 1 p.m.
