PISCATAWAY, NJ (April 23, 2003) - The No. 20 Rutgers women's lacrosse team (12-3, 3-2 BIG EAST) extended its win streak to six games with a 14-4 victory against Villanova (4-10, 1-5 Patriot League) Wednesday night on Yurcak Field.
Rutgers opened the scoring when senior Kate Slotman (Moorestown, NJ) scored off a pass from junior Cali Wojdyla (Liverpool, NY) less than three minutes into the game. Junior Cristina Curiale (Summit, NJ) scored an unassisted goal to put Rutgers ahead, 2-0. Villanova's Meghan Carolan cut the Knights' lead to one with her first goal of the night. RU answered with three straight goals, led off by Slotman's second of the game. With 10:18 to play in the first half, junior Maggie Bopp (Lindenhurst, NY) scored her first of three goals off a pass from Melissa Mosey (Skaneateles, NY). Melissa Mosey then made the score 5-1 in favor of the Knights with a free position goal.
The Wildcats' Cindy Koza scored with just under seven minutes to play in the half to give Villanova its second goal of the game, but Jessica Mosey (Skaneateles, NY) answered with an unassisted goal to return RU's lead to four (6-2). VU's Koza scored her second goal with a free-position shot with two minutes left in the half, but RU's Bopp scored the last goal of the half off a pass from Curiale with 14 seconds on the clock. RU left the field ahead by four at the half, 7-3.
The Scarlet Knights dominated the second half, outscoring Villanova 7-1 in the final 30 minutes. Jessica Mosey and Wojdyla scored back-to-back goals in 22 seconds, while Slotman, Kristin Checksfield (Collingswood, NJ) and Bopp each added another RU tally to put Rutgers ahead, 12-3. Curiale assisted on three of the four goals, with Wojdyla also assisting on one. Villanova's Carolan scored the Wildcats final goal of the evening with 5:38 to play, making the score 12-4.
Checksfield scored her second goal on a free-position shot, while freshman Patra Krinis (Somerville, NJ) scored the final tally of the night, giving RU the 14-4 victory.
RU sophomore Lyndsey Feldman (Ft. Myers, FL) played all but the last six minutes of the game, making six saves. Rookie Jaclyn Greenbaum (Ellicott City, MD) made one save while allowing no goals in the final minutes of play. Villanova's Jess McGrattan and Lauren Avery split time in goal, combining for nine saves.
