Traveling to Long Island, N.Y. on Wednesday April 15, to face Long Island University for a doubleheader, the Villanova softball team lost two straight to the Blackbirds, 7-1 and 5-4, to snap their seven-game winning streak. With the losses, the Wildcats' record drops to 26-14 on the season.
On the mound for the 'Cats in game one, freshman Keri Stoller took the loss pitching five innings and surrendering seven hits and five runs (four earned), while striking out four and walking two. On offense for Villanova, freshman Jackie Pasquerella went two-for-three and had the Wildcats' lone run, while sophomore Regina Speicher had the Villanova RBI.
In game two, the Wildcats took a 4-3 lead into the sixth inning, but the Blackbirds scored two into the bottom of the inning to win the game 5-4. Senior Brenda Roach (8-2) took the loss pitching six and two-thirds innings, giving up nine hits and five runs. Leading the Villanova offensive charge was sophomore Megan O'Leary who hit a two-run homerun in the third inning. Senior Jessica DeLuca also had a big day for the Cats going three-for-four with a run scored and an RBI. With the three hits, DeLuca became only the third Villanova player ever to surpass the 200 career hit plateau.
The Wildcats will look to get back on track on Thursday, April 16, as they travel to the University of Pennsylvania to face off against the Quakers at 2:30 p.m.
