PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Villanova baseball team rolled to a dominant 14-1 victory over Towson on Wednesday, May 6, at Villanova Ballpark.
The Wildcats wasted no time taking control. With two outs and a runner on second in the first inning, senior Michael Whooley opened the scoring with an RBI double to right-center. Sophomore Austin Lemon followed with a double down the left field line to bring home another run, and freshman Larry Hotaling made it three consecutive doubles, driving in a third run to cap a productive opening frame.
Villanova continued to build its lead in the second. Freshman Jack Roventini singled up the middle, stole second, and later scored on Leonard's second hit of the day. Whooley added to his big afternoon with another RBI double, extending the lead to 5-0.
The Wildcats broke the game open in the fourth inning. Lemon drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-0, and Hotaling followed with an RBI infield single. An error by the shortstop allowed another run to score, pushing the lead to 8-0. John Freitag then lined a two-run single up the middle, and redshirt sophomore Mark Gialluisi capped the inning with a two-run homer to left, stretching the advantage to 12.
Lemon stayed hot in the fifth, driving in another run with a single up the middle. Hotaling continued his strong day at the plate as well, ripping an RBI triple to right field to give Villanova a 14-0 lead after five innings.
On the mound, Villanova used seven pitchers in the mercy-rule win. CJ Furey earned the start and the victory, tossing two scoreless innings while striking out two.
