TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Villanova University baseball team secured a 4-1 victory over Florida A&M in the final game of a three-game series on Sunday, March 8, at Moore-Kittles Field. Strong pitching and timely hitting helped the Wildcats close out the weekend on a high note.
'CATS STRIKE FIRST
Villanova wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. In the top of the second inning, senior
Collin Quintano launched his fourth home run of the season over the left-field wall to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead.
The Wildcats added to their advantage in the fourth inning. After
John Freitag reached base and
Carter Richey was hit by a pitch, freshman
Jack Roventini delivered with a two-run single through the right side to score both runners and push Villanova's lead to 3-0.
STRONG START ON THE MOUND
Graduate student
Will Parkinson made his first start of the season and set the tone early for the Wildcats. Parkinson worked four scoreless innings, allowing five hits while striking out five batters and walking just one.
The Villanova defense backed him up throughout his outing, helping keep the Rattlers off the scoreboard through the first four frames.
CAPTAIN JACK
Roventini continued his impressive afternoon in the sixth inning. With
Larry Hotaling on second base, the freshman center fielder singled to left field to drive in another run and extend the Wildcats' lead to 4-1.
Roventini finished the day with
two hits and three RBIs, giving him four RBIs to start his collegiate career.
DAMAGE CONTROL
Florida A&M got on the board in the fifth inning. After a double and a single put runners on the corners, the Rattlers scored on a balk to cut the Villanova lead to 3-1.
However, reliever
Graham Moore was able to limit the damage and escape the inning with the Wildcats still in control.
HOLDER CLOSES THE DOOR
Junior
Jeremiah Holder entered in the sixth inning and shut down any chance of a Rattler comeback.
Holder tossed 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three batters to earn his second save of the season and seal the 4-1 Villanova victory.
