Box Score BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Villanova University baseball team dropped the series finale to Florida Atlantic, 15-5, on Sunday afternoon at FAU Baseball Stadium. The Wildcats move to 2-6 on the season following the contest.
OWLS STRIKE EARLY
Florida Atlantic seized control in the opening frame, scoring six runs on seven hits in the first inning. The Owls followed with four more runs in the second, including a two-run homer, to build a 10-0 advantage through two innings.
The early surge forced Villanova to go to the bullpen in the first inning, as
Will Parkinson entered in relief and worked into the fourth.
WILDCATS RESPOND
Villanova broke through in the top of the fifth.
Michael Whooley worked a walk and
John Freitag singled to set up
Brayden Leonard, who delivered an RBI single down the left field line to put the Wildcats on the board.
The offense continued to chip away in the sixth inning.
Carter Richey was hit by a pitch to begin the frame, and
Jack Roventini followed with a single.
JoJo Montgomery drove in a run with a single through the right side before
Austin Lemon added an RBI single to right center. Later in the inning,
Aidan Barry was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another run, trimming the deficit to 12-4.
Villanova added one more in the seventh as Lemon singled home Richey for his second RBI of the afternoon.
LEMON LEADS THE WAY
Austin Lemon paced the Wildcats offensively, going 3-for-5 with two RBI. Leonard, Roventini, Freitag and Montgomery each added hits, as Villanova finished with 10 total on the day.
The Wildcats put together good at bats in the middle innings, scoring four runs between the fifth and sixth to apply pressure after the early FAU outburst.
BULLPEN NOTES
JP Podgorski provided stability out of the bullpen, tossing two scoreless innings and striking out two.
Jeremiah Holder and
Conor Smith also logged relief appearances as Villanova worked to settle the game after the first two innings.
Defensively, the Wildcats committed no errors in the contest.
