Undefeated Record Extends Through Third Weekend With Four-Set Win at Old Dominion

Campbell McKinnon is named Player of the Match as Alyssa Nelson totals fifth straight double-double

NORFOLK, Va. – The third weekend of the volleyball season ended in yet another undefeated record for the Villanova Wildcats as VU took down Old Dominion in four sets (25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 25-14) on Sunday afternoon at the ODU Volleyball Center.

Campbell McKinnon earned Player of the Match for the Wildcats after tying for a match-high with 13 kills and six blocks on a .706 hitting percentage as Alyssa Nelson totaled her fifth straight double-double with 26 assists in addition to 10 digs.

Abby Harrell (12), Taylor Lewis (10) and Cat Young (10) each added double-digit terminations for Villanova (8-0). Reagan McGivern contributed a career-best six rejections, Marikate Ritterbusch put up a career-high in digs (five) and Ava Mehrten added eight kills and five blocks for her best marks as a Villanovan.

"It was a fun environment in a tight gym with an active crowd, so it was a hard place to play and it's good to get a win here," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "Taylor and Campbell had fantastic matches offensively and I thought it was our best blocking performance yet this year."

The beginning of the opening frame was evenly matched as both sides settled in, featuring ties up through 12-all before the 'Cats took three straight to lead by a trio at the media timeout. Villanova strung together points multiple times the rest of the period, grabbing the last four points of the stanza to pick up a 25-19 win.

The Wildcats used a pair of 4-0 runs in the second to force both ODU timeouts at just 11-8. Old Dominion managed to tie it at 12, 13 and 14-all, but Villanova then took two straight and refused to relinquish the edge en route to a 25-21 win and two-set lead.

ODU was able to get one back in the third, grabbing six straight points early on to wrest control of the stanza and not letting VU back within one the rest of the frame on the way to a 25-22 win.

Steinbach called a timeout just four points into the fourth and his team responded instantly, jabbing back with eight of the next nine scores to control the set. Villanova stormed its way to the finish line, ending the match on a 14-4 run to pick up a 25-14 W and a match victory.

The win evens out the all-time series between the Wildcats and Monarchs as VU avenges a 2024 loss to move to 1-1 historically against ODU.

UP NEXT: Villanova rounds out its non-conference schedule next week, heading to Vermillion, S.D., for the South Dakota Classic from Sept. 18-20.
