NORFOLK, Va. – Lucky number seven was picked up on Saturday by Villanova volleyball as the Wildcats advanced to a flawless 7-0 record with a sweep (25-23, 25-12, 25-23) of Delaware at the ODU Volleyball Center.
Abby Harrell was named Player of the Match, which ODU elected to name this weekend instead of an All-Tournament Team, after 13 kills and a match-high 12 digs.
Cat Young led both sides with 14 kills for Villanova (7-0), adding nine digs and three blocks. Alyssa Nelson (22 assists, 10 digs) contributed a double-double while Taylor Lewis added nine terminations on .500 hitting for VU.
Junior Annika Veurink made the first start of her career for the Wildcats with a kill and three rejections on the day as sophomore Margot Randall accounted for her first career blocks (two) as a third set starter.
"We didn't play very cleanly today but found a way to win in the two tight sets, and that's a good trait to have," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "We'll have to be cleaner tomorrow to pull out another win."
It was a dicey start to the first set for the 'Cats as Delaware got out to a three-point lead on multiple occasions up through 18-15, but Villanova responded to tie the period and force a UDel timeout. The Wildcats took five of the last six points in the frame to gather the opener by a score of 25-23.
Set two was far different right from the jump with Villanova forcing an early Blue Hen break at 6-2 after five straight VU points, then later multiple three, four and five-score Wildcat strings easily gave them the stanza 25-12.
The third featured back-and-forth action with 10 ties and seven lead changes, the last coming at 21-21 before the 'Cats got the four points necessary to sweep the match and advance to 7-0.
With the victory, Villanova extends its edge over Delaware in the all-time series to 26-20 with wins in the last seven matchups and four straight sweeps opposite the Blue Hens.
UP NEXT: The 'Cats will wrap up the weekend with a Sunday afternoon tilt, taking on the host Monarchs to close the Old Dominion Invitational.
