LOUISVILLE, K.Y.— Sophomore long-stick midfielder
Jake Melchionni earned his second All-American honor of the year on Thursday when the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) announced their yearly awards.
He was named an honorable mention by the organization and was one of eight LSMs given the nod.
With Melchionni and
Tyler Sandoval being named All-Americans, it marks the tenth year in a row that at least two VU Men's Lacrosse players earned national honors.
The LSM also received BIG EAST Co-Specialist of the Year honors, as well as being named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. He is the first Wildcat specialist to earn this honor in program history.
He finished the season with 1.71 caused turnovers per game, leading the BIG EAST. This is the fourth season out of the last six that a Villanova defender has led the conference, with Patrick Kennedy doing so in both 2020 and 2021 and
Stephen Zupicich in 2024.
The Bernardsville, N.J., native finished second in the conference in total turnovers caused, playing in 14 games in his second season on the Main Line.
His 11 caused turnovers and 21 ground balls during BIG EAST action were crucial to the 'Cats tying their best conference finish at 4-1 in 2025.
Melchionni's team-high 24 forced turnovers helped Villanova to their fifth consecutive season finishing within the top 20 in caused turnovers per game as a team, a mark in which they caused 9.53 per game this season.
He also finished second on the team with 49 ground balls while playing on the wing on faceoffs. Melchionni had four different games where he corralled at least six ground balls.
Villanova fans are well familiar with Melchionni's grandfather, Bill (VU '66), who was named an All-American, but he is also the third in his family to receive USILA All-American honors for lacrosse. His uncle, Drew, earned the nod in all four years at Virginia, and his father, Keith, was named to this list three different times at Duke.
Earlier this year, the LSM earned a nod on the USILA Team of the Week for the week of April 14, when he forced three turnovers and scooped up seven ground balls.
