Villanova’s Comeback Effort Falls Short Against LIU

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Villanova University baseball team rallied back from a six-run deficit and managed to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, but ultimately fell to LIU, 10-7, on Friday (March 28) at Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth.

Collin Quintano's pinch-hit grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning was the driving force behind the Wildcats' (13-11) comeback effort. It was Quintano's first home run of the season, and Villanova's second grand slam in as many games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Sharks (12-14) jumped out to a sizeable lead in the first inning, using a walk and three hits to score three runs.

Both starting pitchers were dominant in the second, third and fourth innings, holding both teams scoreless throughout. However, LIU got to Villanova starter Bobby Olsen again in the fifth. With two runners already on, Jacob Piperic laid down a bunt that was fielded by Olsen, whose throw sailed past the first baseman to score two runs and give the Sharks a 5-0 lead.

Villanova finally got its first baserunners of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, but were unable to score before LIU extended its lead to six with a solo home run in the top of the seventh.

The Wildcats began to rally in the bottom of the seventh frame. An RBI double by freshman John Freitag scored Michael Whooley and got the 'Cats on the board before a pair of sacrifice flies scored two more runs to cut the six-run deficit in half.

LIU answered in the top of the eighth with a three-run home run over the right field wall, giving the Sharks a 9-3 advantage.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, three walks loaded the bases for Quintano, who drilled an 0-1 pitch for a grand slam, pulling the Wildcats within two runs.

A solo home run in the top of the ninth brought the LIU lead back to 10-7. Villanova put runners on first and second with nobody out in the ninth, but the next three runners were retired, sealing the 10-7 win for the Sharks.

LIU starter Garret Yawn improved to 3-2 with the win, while reliever Christian Yoo earned his first save of the season. Olsen fell to 1-3 with the loss for Villanova.
