Wildcats Dominate Georgetown For Wednesday Night Sweep at Nevin

Alyssa Nelson outpaces the whole Hoya team in assists to give Villanova six straight over GU

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The final midweek bout of the season was domination for Villanova volleyball, downing the Georgetown Hoyas in straight sets (25-17, 25-17, 25-18) on Wednesday night at the Jake Nevin Field House.

It's the sixth straight victory for the Wildcats against the Hoyas and moves Villanova to 14-4 at home opposite Georgetown since 2001. It also marks VU's sixth sweep of the 2025 campaign but the first since Oct. 3 against Butler.

Abby Harrell paced the match with the day's lone double-double (match-high 16 kills, 11 digs) as Taylor Lewis added an error-free nine terminations on a career-high .600 hitting for Villanova (18-6, 9-4 BIG EAST).

The Wildcat setters carved up the Hoyas with Alyssa Nelson contributing more assists (24) than Georgetown's team (23) despite playing just half the rotations while Ava Harris added 17 helpers and a career-best four aces.

Cat Young put forth seven kills, 10 digs and a career-high four blocks, Campbell McKinnon hit .462 with a match-best five rejections and Marly Smith posted an ace during her four-point serving run.

"It's a good win for us, it was one we had to have," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "Taylor was outstanding and Lola Buck-Taylor had a great match for us. Anytime we get a season sweep of Georgetown we celebrate it."

The Wildcats jumped out to a 9-3 edge to open the match with aces providing a trio of those scores. Georgetown closed the gap to one but VU regrouped and used a 5-0 stretch to force both Hoya timeouts, then ended the period on a 3-0 run for a 25-17 victory.

It was another hot start to the second for the home side as Villanova forced a GU break with another 9-3 advantage and kept that momentum throughout the stanza, storming their way to another eight-point win.

Yet again the third began with a VU hot streak as a 13-5 start put the 'Cats in the driver's seat early, but just like the first Georgetown responded to bring it within two. The Wildcats bounced right back with a four-point service run from Smith and didn't look back, finishing the match as a sweep with a 25-18 victory.

The victory gives Villanova the edge in the all-time series, handing VU a 33-32 advantage over Georgetown with wins in 13 of the last 16 against the Hoyas.

UP NEXT: The 'Cats will make their final road trip of the season, traveling to Nebraska for an evening matchup against No. 12 Creighton in Omaha on Friday night.
