Wildcats Fall in Rainy Affair

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova fell to Georgetown 8-6 on Saturday afternoon. Heavy rain played a part in the game as the teams combined for 33 turnovers.

The first quarter was the highest scoring period of the game. After the Hoyas opened the game's scoring, Villanova responded with three unanswered goals from a trio of freshmen in Rose Christie, Bella Piselli and Mary Moore. Georgetown would pull one back off a free position attempt to close out the opening period.

Villanova could not get much going offensively in the second quarter as the rain really played a factor. The Wildcats were losing the ball on the run and could not squeeze tight passes in to create chances causing them to commit 14 turnovers in the opening half. The Hoyas scored two goals in the period to take a 4-3 lead into the halftime break.

Sydney Pappas ended Villanova's 24-minute scoring drought in the third quarter when she weaved through the Hoya defense and scored. Ashlyn Hickey scored her second goal of the season with a rocket into the bottom corner of the goal, but Georgetown continued to convert on free position attempts as they tallied two more goals to take a 7-5 lead into the fourth quarter.

Georgetown was able to pull away in the final frame as the Wildcats could not convert hitting the crossbar multiple times in the period. Hickey scored her second goal of the game on a free position attempt with five minutes remaining.

Emma Verhoest was stellar for the Wildcats on the draw as Villanova won 13 of 17 draws. Cate Gallagher recorded six saves in the loss.

Gracie Driggs led the Hoyas with four goals in the win. Leah Warehime recorded six saves in goal.

UP NEXT: The Wildcats travel to Butler next weekend for a road contest. The opening draw is set for noon in Indianapolis.
