VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova earned a 3-3 draw in a BIG EAST Conference match played on a warm and sunny late fall afternoon at the Higgins Soccer Complex. The Wildcats held a 3-2 edge after a
Vincent Petrera in the 76
th minute but the Hoyas got the equalizer from Jack Heaps in the 85
th minute.
"At this point of the year you start to get a timeline on how much more of the season you have," stated Villanova head coach
Mark Fetrow. "We knew coming in here that, more likely than not, we needed three points today. That was the driving force, what we focused on all week.
"I was happy with how the guys battled and how they competed. It was good to get out of that first half with a 1-0 lead having not given up a goal. That was a change from what we had been doing, which was conceding goals early. But then in the second half we just didn't have enough to make sure we kept the clean sheet."
The early lead came by way of
Michael teDuits second goal of the season off a feed from
Jordan Canica. The Wildcats added a second goal in the early minutes of the second half when Canica finished off a feed from
Jason Bouregy. At that point, Villanova held a 2-0 lead over the Hoyas.
"We wanted to stay committed to our shape in the 4-4-2 in the second half," Fetrow stated. "It had really helped us in the first half. Georgetown's a great team, though, that knows how to create chances."
At 52:21 Tate Lampman got the Hoyas on the scoreboard, cutting the lead in half. After a potential Georgetown penalty kick attempt was waved off after a video review, the Hoyas created another PK bid in the 68
th minute. This time Georgetown was awarded the PK and Matthew Van Horn converted at 67:33 to level matters at two.
Villanova took the lead back at 75:41 off a gorgeous move and shot by Petrera, who beat Georgetown keeper Luca Ulrich with a shot along the turd to vault the 'Cats back on top.
"Great work there by Vinnie," said Fetrow.
Georgetown pressed forward and applied relentless pressure on the Wildcats. Goalkeeper Sebastien Cutler DeJesus continued his fine play – he ended the afternoon with seven saves – and twice thwarted close in bid by the Hoyas.
Finally, though, Georgetown tied the game when Van Horn found Heaps at 84:10.
"We're disappointed that we couldn't hold the leads against an opponent of Georgetown's caliber," said Fetrow. "But I thought a lot of guys played well. We just have to be better at minimizing our mistakes on the back end and defending set pieces."
Villanova hosts Providence Saturday at noon at the Higgins Soccer Complex as part of Homecoming Weekend.
