Villanova Falls To No. 6 Creighton in Friday Bout

Wildcats will remain at home for Sunday matchup against the RV Marquette Golden Eagles

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova volleyball saw its eight-match win streak and undefeated BIG EAST record come to a close on Friday night, falling to No. 6 Creighton in straight sets (23-25, 14-25, 14-25) at Jake Nevin Field House.

The night marked VUVB's annual "Pink Out" Cancer Awareness match, with players wearing pink hair bows and warmup shirts while fans were encouraged to wear pink and donate to the Unite for HER foundation.

"It was a fun match, we had a nice crowd and we were glad to support a good cause tonight in Unite For HER," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "I felt good about how our team played at moments, but wish we had been a little steadier. We saw that our top end is pretty good, but we have a lot of evening out to do."

Abby Harrell totaled a team-best nine kills for Villanova (11-5, 4-1 BIG EAST) as Tara Garvey contributed six terminations and Riley Homer converted on five of her 13 error-less swings.

Alyssa Nelson and Taylor Jakubowski each contributed 12 assists for the Wildcats with Cat Young pacing the squad at seven digs.

The Bluejays used a 4-0 run to establish some distance in the opening frame; the visiting lead getting up to 14-9 before a VU pause.

Eventually down 24-17 and on the brink of an eight-point loss in the first, Villanova battled back and staved off six straight set points to induce a CU break. Despite a match-high six Harrell kills in the stanza and the 'Cats out-hitting Creighton .361 to .256, the Jays took the opener 25-23.

It was a tightly contested second period in the early going with the home side keeping it within two up until a 4-1 Bluejay string made it 15-11. But Villanova took just three points the rest of the stanza, suffering a 25-14 defeat.

The third set was much of the same as the 'Cats led 11-10 before a 9-0 CU stretch broke the period open. Creighton didn't let up for the remainder of the match, closing it out on a 6-2 run to become the last unbeaten BIG EAST team standing.

UP NEXT: The Wildcats round out the weekend at home with a Sunday matchup against the Marquette Golden Eagles at 1:00 p.m. from Jake Nevin Field House.
