Volleyball Wins First BIG EAST Match With Victory Over St. John's

Sellout crowd helps Wildcats to big win over Red Storm

VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova University volleyball defeated St. John's in its BIG EAST home opener on Friday, dispatching the Red Storm in four sets (25-15, 25-21, 16-25, 25-17) in front of a sellout crowd.

"We took advantage of a team that didn't have its best night, and that's what you have to do in this league," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "Our middles had great nights, Riley Homer came up with kills when we needed them and Kathleen Johnson had a good night. We blocked the best we have all year and our defensive players played great; it was a well-balanced effort."

Kiera Booth led Villanova (5-10, 1-2 BIG EAST) with 12 kills on a .625 hitting percentage while Homer notched 11 kills for the 'Cats. Madeline Barber tallied a career-high 10 blocks, Andrea Campos totaled 34 assists and a career-high four assists, and Elizabeth Feczko contributed a match-high 15 digs.

VU moves to 14-10 all-time against St. John's, now owning the last two matchups in the series.

Fueled by the energy of the crowd, the first frame was all Villanova as the Wildcats hopped out to a 14-6 advantage. The 'Cats led the entirety of the set and secured a 25-15 victory.

The second stanza was much closer, featuring seven ties and four lead changes. Villanova went up by as many as four, but the Johnnies brought the deficit back to one. VU eventually took momentum and would not relinquish it on the way to a 25-21 win.

It was St. John's with an early advantage in the third, as the Red Storm hopped out to a 13-6 lead. The visitors dominated the period with a .343 hitting percentage and captured it 25-16.

After SJ took leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the fourth frame, the Wildcats went on a 13 point run with Feczko at the service line, taking a 14-2 lead. St. John's stormed right back, though, winning the next nine to bring it back to a 14-11 score. Following a timeout by Steinbach, Villanova took back momentum and proceeded to a match victory.

UP NEXT: The Wildcats remain at home, taking on the Seton Hall Pirates on Saturday. First serve comes at 5 p.m. at the Jake Nevin Field House.
