Wildcats Suffer Defeat to Butler in Weekend Closer

Villanova will travel to New England next weekend for matches at UConn, Providence

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Villanova University's volleyball team wrapped up week three of BIG EAST play on Sunday, suffering a loss to the Butler Bulldogs at Hinkle Fieldhouse in four sets (23-25, 25-19, 24-26, 13-25).

"We played well enough to win," Steinbach said. "We just couldn't finish in either of the two deuce sets and those are the ones that are tough when you're on a bad run."

Three players totaled double digit kills for Villanova (5-13, 1-5 BIG EAST), as Kiera Booth led with 15 kills on a .387 hitting percentage and Rose Crist added 14 terminations.

Riley Homer (11 kills, 16 digs) and Andrea Campos (40 assists, 12 digs) each tallied double doubles, while Elizabeth Feczko put up a team-high 21 digs.

It was a back-and-forth opening frame, as the first stanza featured 11 ties and five lead changes. Despite five Butler service errors, the Bulldogs won the set 25-23.

Period two was much of the same, as neither side could establish a major advantage. After a tie at 17-17, the 'Cats would end the set on an 8-2 run and leveled the match.

Butler hopped out to an early lead in the third, going up 6-2 to begin the frame. But Villanova worked its way right back into the set, taking a lead at 9-8. Despite the Wildcats staving off multiple set points, the Bulldogs won two straight points to win 26-24.

BU once again put up a hot start in period four, taking advantages of 9-2 and 13-3. The 'Dogs cruised on to a victory in the match with a 25-14 win.

UP NEXT: VU will make another trip to New England next weekend, squaring off against UConn on Thursday afternoon before visiting Providence on Saturday.
