Wildcats Down the Drexel Dragons Saturday Afternoon

Box Score Philadelphia, Pa. – On Saturday, Mar. 9, the Villanova women's lacrosse team defeated Drexel 13-9 at Vidas Field. The Wildcats improved to 4-3 on the season while the Dragons fall to 2-4 overall.

Villanova was first to score on the sunny afternoon. Liz Trojan netted in her eighth goal of the season from a pass by Katie Comerford.

Drexel tied things up at one a few moments later on a goal by Cassidy Delaney. Soon after the Wildcats were unleashed and scored four uninterrupted goals in the next 11 minutes. Brittany Bruno dished a pass to Comerford who put the 'Cats up 2-1 near the 17-minute mark.

Bruno was a strong contributor on offense throughout the contest. After her assist to Comerford she netted in one of her own and later scored another in the back end of the first half.

After Bruno's goal, the Trojan-Comerford duo struck again. Comerford fed Trojan who found her way past Zoe Bennet in the net. Devin Hassinger was the last to strike in the Wildcats scoring run after receiving a pass from Ashley Lynch. Hassinger's goal put Villanvoa up 5-1 with 6:22 left in the first.

With 4:04 on the clock, Drexel's Courtney Dietzel found an open Caroline Cummings who was able to cut the 'Cats lead to 5-2. A minute later is when Bruno scored her second goal of the game and Hassinger tallied her first assist of the year.

Villanova almost went into the half with a notable lead, but Colleen Grady was able to score her 11th goal of the season and cut Nova's lead to 6-3 going into the half.

The Dragons came out of halftime and continued to break down the Wildcats' defense, scoring two back-to-back goals.

Drexel's resiliency was all it took to get Villanova back on track. Kim McDonough scored two consecutive goals of her own to start the Wildcats 5-0 run, one goal was assisted by Comerford. Following McDonough's goals, Hassinger netted in two of her own, the first assisted by McDonough the second by Comerford. Grainger Rosati had the last hand in the scoring run and netted hers in with 19:37 on the clock after receiving a pass from Bruno. Rosati's goal put the 'Cats up 11-5.

Marah Hayes put an end to Nova's run but started a small one for her team. Karson Harris and Delaney went on and scored two goals after Hayes for a 3-0 run to cut the lead to 11-8 with just over 10 minutes left in the half.

Hassinger came alive in the second half and scored her third of the frame. The contest was also a strong one for Comerford who assisted on another one of Hassinger's goals and tallied her fifth of the game.

After Villanova's 12th goal, Drexel answered back with a Maggie Stetson goal to cut the lead to 12-9. Three minutes later, Villanova went up four after McDonough recorded the third goal of her hat trick.

Hassinger and Comerford led the Wildcats for the afternoon. Hassinger recorded four goals and one assist for five points. She also secured nine draw controls. Comerford dished out five assists and scored one goal for six points.

In the net, Alexa Moro saw 19 shots by the Dragons and made eight saves. She now has a total of 78 for the season.

Bennett ended the contest with eight saves as well on 26 shots faced from Villanova. On offense, Delaney led the Dragons with two goals of her own.

Villanova returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 12 when they welcome the ARMY Black Knights for a 3 p.m. contest in the Villanova Stadium.
