PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Villanova women's lacrosse team heads downtown to face St. Joseph's for a weekend matchup at Sweeney Field on Saturday, Mar. 2 at 12 p.m. The Wildcats head into the contest 2-2 overall while St. Joe's sits at 1-2.
The Wildcats
Villanova is coming off a tough 14-6 loss to No. 17 Navy on Wednesday. The Midshipmen were able to put a hold on some of Villanova's strongest players, but many others stepped up in their place.
After four games,
Katie Comerford leads the team with 15 points after scoring six goals and a dishing out a team high nine assists. Fellow attack,
Ashley Lynch sits in second with 11 points on five goals and six assists.
Still leading the pack in goals and draw controls this season is
Devin Hassinger. She has scored a total of nine goals and has won 22 draw controls.
Grainger Rosati sits closest behind her with 12 draw controls.
On the defensive end, senior
Maggie O'Neill and freshman
Sydney Frank have been huge components. Frank has caused a team high nine turnovers and O'Neill has caused six, while the pair has also each collected eight ground balls apiece.
So far, the class of 2022 has been huge competitors for the Wildcats this year. Five of the 10 newcomers have seen action this year. In the net,
Alexa Moro has been a huge factor, having seen action in all four games with two starts.
In 223 minutes of action she has recorded a team high 37 saves on 104 shots faced and has allowed 41 goals as a rookie. Senior keeper,
Olivia Gonsalves has also shared time in the net with Moro. Gonsalves has seen action in three matchups and made two starts.
Last Game
The Wildcats and Hawks last faced each other in 2018 at the Villanova Stadium. Villanova came out on top with an 18-11 victory over St. Joe's. This win set the 'Cats up with an 11-10 all-time series record over the Hawks.
In the victory, nine Wildcats contributed on the offensive end. Lynch and
Liz Trojan added a team high four goals apiece and Comerford,
Jillian Swikart and Rosati added two each as well. On top of Lynch's four goals she also dished out two assists. Comerford also racked up three assists for a team high on the afternoon.
As a team, Villanova recorded 20 draw controls, six of which were won by Hassinger on her journey to eventually reaching a season high 83.
St. Joseph's led Villanova 34-31 in shots but the pair was tied at 25 for shots on goal. However, Villanova did lead 14-7 in saves and 20-10 in draw controls.
On the Hawks side, Sinead Brierley led the team with three goals and one assists for four points. Hayley Sabol and Francesca Donato each contributed the next most goals with two apiece.
Julia Michaels and
Khaia Baranowski split their time in the net equally each spending a half's worth of the game in the goal. Michaels allowed seven goals and recorded seven saves and Baranowski allowed four goals and recorded seven saves.
Corinne Buttner was the primary goalkeeper for the Hawks during the contest. She allowed eight goals and recorded four saves while Liz O'Sullivan allowed 10 goals and recorded three saves in the relief position.
St. Joseph's
This year, the Hawks are currently led in points by Donato with 14 on six goals and a team high eight assists. Second on the team in points and first in goals is Rebecca Lane. Lane has scored eight goals in three games and dished out two assists for 10 points.
Nine other Hawks have also added to the team's 37 goal total this season. Leading the team in draw controls and ground balls is Bridget Cerciello with nine and 10 respectively.
Three goalkeepers have shared time in the net for St. Joseph's throughout the teams three games. Buttner has seen the most time with 90 minutes and has recoded a team high 20 saves on 53 shots faced. Amber Weedon and Veronica Wilson have also seen time in the net. Together they have recorded 10 saves on seven goals allowed each and 18 shots faced apiece.
Looking Forward
Villanova's next game is scheduled for Wednesday, Mar. 6 at 1 p.m. against Holy Cross at the Villanova Stadium. That same week the Wildcats will head to Drexel for a 1 p.m. matchup On Saturday, Mar. 9 against the Dragons.
