Villanova, Pa. – Villanova volleyball ended its two-game slide and got back in the win column with a four-set victory over Seton Hall Wednesday night.
Emma Decker paced the Wildcats with 40 assists while the team racked up 57 kills on the night.
Mallory Potts and
Allie Olsonoski each made it to double digit kills while three other Wildcats added at least seven. Villanova finished hitting .373 as a team on the evening. That hit percentage is the team's highest mark of the season.
The defense stepped up big as well, holding Seton Hall to just hitting .185, with 10 blocks and a strong performance from the back row, led by
Regan Lough's 19 digs.
Villanova, and especially
Clare Delaplane, came out hot. The sophomore had three kills for Nova's first three points and piled up seven in the first set alone. Villanova kept that momentum going and rode it to a 25-19 victory in the first set.
The second set did not go as smooth for Villanova as the first. The set was littered with serving and passing errors and resulted in a 25-20 Seton Hall victory to tie up the match at 1-1.
After the second set, the Wildcats regrouped and wasted little time in putting the match away. The third set featured 17 Villanova kills with six different players recording a kill. The set was close for the beginning, but Villanova closed with a 12-5 run to win the match 25-16.
The final set was all 'Cats. The set was even at 8-8 before Villanova used a 7-0 run, fueled by three aces from Decker, to pull away and go on to take the match 25-13.
"I thought offensively we weren't very good, we just didn't pass the ball great in the first two sets," said head coach
Josh Steinbach. "Once we settled in with serving and passing the match got a lot easier for us. We're going to be a lot better on Friday night."
Villanova will be back in action Friday when they take on No. 12 Marquette at 7 p.m. back in Jake Nevin Field House.
