VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Villanova women's volleyball team fell to the Georgetown Hoyas 3-2 at Jake Nevin Field House on Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats won the first two sets, but the Hoyas would take the final three sets to win the match.
Georgetown improves to 9-5 (2-0) on the season while the Wildcats fall to 8-6 (1-1).
Head coach Josh Steinbach on the match, "Tough loss for us. Georgetown played really well. They served really well in our gym. We usually expect that we can out serve and out pass teams here at home but did not today. So we are going to get back at it and get ready for St. John's on Tuesday."
Sophomore outside hitter Mallory Potts led the Wildcats' attack with 18 kills, tying her season-high. Two other Wildcats had double digit kills. Freshman outside Clare Delaplane with 14 and senior middle blocker Amanda Pedersen-Henry with 11.
Junior libero Regan Lough recorded 30 digs for the Wildcats.
Junior setter Emma Decker dished out 41 assists. Second game in a row with 41 or more assists and her eighth time this season eclipsing 41 or more assists.
In the opening set, Villanova was the first team to ten, leading Georgetown 10-6. The Hoyas would tie the set up at 18. The Wildcats went on a 3-0 run to lead 21-18 and the Hoyas wouldn't be able to catch up after that as Villanova won the set 25-22.
Wildcats controlled the second set as there were only four tie scores and zero lead changes. Villanova went on a 6-0 run in the beginning of the set to make the score 10-4 in favor of the Wildcats. The Wildcats would continue to control the set by increasing their lead to 20-10. Villanova would win the set 25-14.
The third set started off back and forth between the two teams. Georgetown led 14-9 after going on a couple of small scoring runs. The Wildcats fought back to make it 20-23 Georgetown, but it wouldn't be enough as the Hoyas won the set 25-22. There were five tie scores and only one lead change during the third set.
Georgetown built their lead early in the fourth set. The Hoyas scored the first three points of the set and then increased their lead to 12-8. Villanova rallied back again to tie the set at 20. The teams would trade the next four points making it 22-22 and then 23-23. Georgetown would win the final two points to win the set 25-23.
In the final set, the Wildcats led 8-3. The Hoyas would once again rally to cut into the Wildcats' lead. Georgetown tied the match at 13 and won three of the next four points to win the set 16-14 and the match 3-2.
