Newark, Del. – The Villanova University women's volleyball team defeated Morgan State 3-1 after losing the opening set to the Bears.
Head coach Josh Steinbach on the win, "Good finish to the day. I would have liked to have started that match better, but we ended well. I thought Clare Delaplane and Mallory Potts had a nice match once we got things going and that opened it up for us."
Sophomore outside hitter Mallory Potts and freshman outside hitter Clare Delaplane led the Wildcats with 16 kills on the night. Sophomore defensive specialist Sarah Allman had led the team with 21 digs against Morgan State. Junior setter Emma Decker led the Wildcats again with 43 assists.
Morgan State won the opening set 25-23. Throughout the first there were four lead changes and 11 ties. Sophomore outside hitter Mallory Potts had five of her 16 kills in the opening set.
Villanova would counter back in the second set to tie it up at 1-1. During the second set there were seven tie scores and 2 lead changes. Junior middle blocker Allie Olsonoski had four kills to Wildcats win the set. Villanova ended the second set on a 5-0 run to win the set 25-16.
In the third set Villanova controlled from the beginning by getting out to a 10-3 lead. The Wildcats would never look back and go on to win the set 25-16.
After controlling the third set, Villanova would have to battle to win the fourth. There were 12 times the score was tied and were six lead changes. With the score tied at 19-19, the Wildcats would pull away to win the set 25-22.
With the victory, Villanova improves to 2-0 and will conclude the Delaware Invite tomorrow at 1 p.m. against the tournament host Delaware Blue Hens and will be live streamed.
